Creating an Accurate 3D Model for Schiphol Airport
Schiphol Airport, one of Europe's busiest transportation hubs, is continually evolving to meet the needs of millions of travelers. To support its ongoing expansion and maintenance efforts, Schiphol Airport partnered with Yungo's BIM team to create an accurate and detailed 3D model of the airport structure.
The primary goal was to develop a comprehensive 3D model of Schiphol Airport's entire structure, enabling efficient planning for expansion and ongoing maintenance.
Scope:
- Conduct 3D scanning of the entire airport building structure.
- Generate a highly accurate as-built 3D model from the point cloud data.
- Ensure the model includes the necessary Level of Detail (LOD) 350 for detailed analysis and planning.
Project Execution
The BIM team undertook a meticulous approach to capture the existing conditions of Schiphol Airport:
- 3D Scanning: Comprehensive 3D scanning of the entire airport structure was conducted. This process involved using high-precision laser scanners to capture detailed point cloud data of the building.
- Modeling: The collected point cloud data was processed to create an accurate as-built 3D model of the airport. This model served as a digital twin of the physical structure, containing all relevant information required for expansion and maintenance planning.
- LOD 350: The model was developed to LOD 350, which includes detailed elements and information about the construction, dimensions, and materials. This level of detail ensures the model is suitable for various analyses and decision-making processes.
Yungo’s BIM team successfully developed an accurate and detailed 3D model of Schiphol Airport, overcoming various challenges through advanced technology and collaborative efforts. This model not only supports current expansion and maintenance but also sets a new standard for future projects, showcasing the critical role of BIM in modern infrastructure development.
