UNDP project in Ethiopia
The Czech experts visited Mekelle university under the Project “E-Geo Library” financed by UNDP
Czech company IRCON with partnership of Yungo together with the Mekelle University is creating E-Geo-Library to gather all relevant information regarding geology, hydrogeology and water sector and keep them under one system in digital form available for all stakeholders.
The project is funded by UNDP - Czech Development Cooperation. Activities on the design and development of the new IT platform for the University of Mekelle started in December 2023 with the aim of being fully operational by the second half of 2024.
This week, 25.3. to 29.3. representatives of both Czech companies (Vaclav Weinfurt, Tomas Kafka) had met Dr. Abdulkadir Kedir (Academic vice-president), Dr. Ermias Hagos (Head of geology department) and Getachew Seyoum (ICT Directorate).
The architecture of the system, the concept of the data content and its main functions were presented, discussed, and designed at several internal workshops. A demo version of the application was created for initial testing. The application works as an independent cloud-based document repository enriched with a spatial extension displaying the data in the form of an interactive web map. Users can thus search for documents using a web map browser and download them.
The initiative ensures sustainability through open-source systems and training for university staff. Therefore, the platform will be generally usable for multiple purposes among different university departments.
