Managing Civil Works in Historical Urban Environments: A Risk Mitigation Approach in a Dutch Town
This project was conducted in a historical town in the Netherlands, adding a unique layer of complexity due to the town's rich heritage and urban structure. The civil works involved had to address a variety of specific issues, including the presence of multiple types of bricks, diverse urban vegetation, water streams, bridges, and contaminated soils.
To manage these complexities, the study summarized a set of potential risks into a comprehensive general overview. Moreover, the project developed automated solutions for risk prediction and evaluation. For example, one such solution included an automated system for identifying intersections with trees and other urban vegetation, which could impact construction activities.
The primary objective of this study was to create a methodological concept for managing and mitigating risks in civil engineering projects within historical urban environments. By providing a systematic approach to risk assessment, this study aims to facilitate better planning and execution of civil works in similar settings.
